Linux Mint is a fork of Ubuntu. Linux Mint seems a bit more refined. The newest distro, I prefer the Cinnamon Edition. There is three other editions Mate, KDE and XFCE.

Honestly, the out of box experience with these distros aren't any harder to use than Windows XP. The distros can even migrate your personal files from XP.

I could never let myself get into a tunnel vision, of only one manufacture or one OS. There is to many other OS to see and explore, as he types on a Mac not a Windows computer today.
