Microsoft has partnered with Laplink to provide you with data transfer tools that transfer selected files, folders, and more from an old Windows PC to a new Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 PC.

To get started, download PCmover Express —free for a limited time.

I paid for that in 2008 when I got my Dell and got it from Dell with the high-speed transfer cable but never used it because other PC got screwed up so I started new.

Does it move installed programs too?

I guess this is to replace the Windows Easy Transfer, in previous versions.

It should only transfer personal user data, like documents, pictures, music and even your desktop. Its should transfer program settings, but not the programs themselves. The old Windows transfer used to provide a report, of what programs needed updated or reinstalled . I see you bought a transfer cable, all I ever used which is much faster than a wireless transfer and just as fast as the transfer cable, Ethernet to Ethernet cable connection direct, between the two computers.

I haven't tried this method yet. Plated with it, it installed OK. I can remember using this years ago and it was a disaster, it came with a laptop. I feel real confident about it, it has a user guide link, that is dead.

The Knowledge base is here:  http://kb.laplink.com/index.php/category/pcmover

P.S.   If you move your "C:\User\(your user name) "   complete folder manually to your new computer same folder location, it accomplishes the same thing. It is usually a large file and you can share and copy through a router, external hard drive, etc. in less time.

Was thinking that.

I got old software but it may not know what to do on newer computers.

Got old Norton Uninstall Deluxe that let you make a .exe file of any program that could be installed on another computer with all settings.
I never got to try that part and then they was sued over the program and had to stop selling it.

I can not find or my brother may of taken it and that means it's history. I got older PhotoImpact 8. Got 3 versions but like and use version 8. I need it to reinstall and I can not find it. The company is no longer around either. I really like to reinstall it.

I got XP Pro on Dell I use and XP Pro on older Dell Work Station and XP Home on even older Sony. So main Dell Vostro 410  I got to keep using till I can buy a new one. Has to be program to put program back together to reinstall.

I'm sure that any exe file will work just fine but you will need to run it in compatibility mode but the bad part if I understand your correctly hewee is there is no support and also the programs may even not be compatible since these are older programs with newer OS like Windows 8.1. You can always give it a try but I would make a backup image on Windows 8.1 so you can put the system like it was before when using Norton Uninstall Deluxe. Only way you will is if you start getting errors.
